Sofia M.
Sofia crossed the border as an unaccompanied minor in March 2021 after traveling alone from Guatemala. She was processed at the El Paso facility and placed with a sponsor in the Dallas area. Follow-up welfare checks were never completed. Her family in Guatemala has not heard from her since April 2021.

Carlos traveled alone from Honduras at age 12 after his parents were threatened by gang members. He was processed in McAllen and placed with a distant relative in Houston. The relative later reported that Carlos had left the home and could not be located. His parents in Honduras have received no word since May 2021.

Lucia was just 7 years old when she was separated from her mother at the border. Her mother was detained and later deported; Lucia was processed as an unaccompanied minor and placed with a sponsor family in San Antonio. The sponsor family moved without notifying HHS. Lucia's mother has been searching for her from El Salvador ever since.

Miguel was 14 when he crossed alone after his family in Oaxaca could no longer afford to feed him. He was processed in Tucson and placed with a sponsor in Phoenix. Investigators later found he had been working 12-hour shifts at a food processing plant in violation of child labor laws. He disappeared from the worksite in late 2022 and has not been located since.

Isabella fled Venezuela with her older brother, who was detained separately at the border. She was processed alone in San Diego and placed with a sponsor in Los Angeles. The sponsor's address was later found to be invalid. Isabella's parents, who fled to Colombia, have been searching for both their children since 2022.

Diego was 8 years old when he crossed the border with a group of migrants, none of whom were his family. He was processed in Del Rio and placed with a sponsor in Austin. The sponsor reported Diego as a runaway three months later. His parents in Bogotá have been searching since they lost contact in April 2023.
